Turn code or text into a flowchart with AI

The AI you already use is a flowchart generator. Paste a process or meeting notes into ChatGPT or Claude, or point Cursor or Claude Code at a function, and ask for a flowchart: steps, decisions with yes and no labelled, and the ways it can end. Connect Diagram and the flowchart is saved at a link, and changes go to the same link.

1. Open your AI tool

Any AI works for text. For code, use a tool that can read the repo:

Each guide has the one-minute setup. Once Diagram is connected, every diagram the AI draws is saved at a link instead of staying in the chat.

2. Ask for it

Say what you want to see in plain words. These requests work, and each is one message:

From code

What a function or job really does, including the branches nobody remembers.

  • “Read the password reset handler and draw it as a flowchart: every check, every decision with yes and no labelled, and every way it can end.”
  • “Turn the retry logic in the sync worker into a flowchart.”

From text or notes

A process someone wrote down, a policy, or a meeting.

  • “Turn these notes into a flowchart of how we handle a refund request, and give me a link: (paste the notes)”

Pseudocode or a spec

Logic you are about to write.

  • “Turn this pseudocode into a flowchart, with the error cases as their own branches: (paste it)”

3. Check it

The AI draws what it read or was told. These habits catch most mistakes:

  • Label every decision. Each diamond asks one question and each branch says yes or no. Ask the AI to check that none is missing.
  • Show every ending. Successful or not, every path should reach an end. Missing endings are where the bugs are.
  • Keep it to one screen. Past about 20 steps, ask for a top-level flowchart and a separate one for the complicated part.
  • Prefer the code to a description of it. If the logic exists, have a coding tool read it. A flowchart from memory shows what people think happens.

4. Share the link and keep it current

Put the link in the README, the pull request or the doc. When things change, ask for the change in plain words. It’s saved at the same link and every earlier version is kept, so nobody is looking at an old picture.

Questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude make a flowchart?
Yes. Both draw flowcharts from a description or pasted notes. On their own they give you text or a picture inside the chat; with Diagram connected, the flowchart is saved at a link you can share and update.
Can AI turn code into a flowchart?
Yes. Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and GitHub Copilot can read a function and draw its flowchart, including the branches. Name the function or file.
Is there a free AI flowchart generator?
If you already use ChatGPT, Claude or Cursor, you have one. Diagram’s free plan keeps your first diagrams at a link at no cost.
Can I edit the flowchart?
Ask the AI for the change in plain words. It is saved at the same link and earlier versions are kept.
